Karen Kurak
Karen Kurak is currently working under the name of Spare Thread Studio.
Spare Thread Studio has a mission to find ways to reuse and upcycle thrifted, found and saved materials into the beautiful, the usable and the fun.
Karen received a BFA from the University of Cincinnati. She has worked with painting, photography, collage, installation, mixed media, papermaking, and fibers.
Although her artistic interests have a wide range the current focus is on fiber.
Spare Thread Studio encompasses weaving, dying, stitching, wearable and functional cloth, collage as cards, 2-D or wearable art.
One long standing and continual practice is her hand dyed, hand woven 100% cotton baby blankets.
Karen is interested in color, texture, things ephemeral, things here, then gone. She is inspired by nature and memory. She is interested in combining sometimes unlikely elements into new relationships that feel interesting and evocative.
As a 2020 transplant to Vermont, Karen works out of her Brattleboro Studio and at her home work space equally. She participates in Vermont Crafts Council Open Studio events as well as Brattleboro’s Market on Main in 2024 and 2025.
Karen works as a somatic and art therapist in Brattleboro when she is not art making.
