David & Michelle Holzapfel
David and Michelle Holzapfel established their Marlboro studio and gallery, Applewoods, in 1976 on VT Route 9 in the southern Green Mountains. They specialize in Vermont’s spalted and burled hardwoods to make one-of-a-kind, handmade/ handcarved furniture and vessels.
Their work has been acquired by museums, businesses and homes throughout North America. Custom orders are welcome. Resume and brochure upon request.
David Holzapfel
David has been making furniture and objects from the unhewn hardwoods of Vermont for thirty years. He has exhibited in gallery and museum shows nationwide though most of his time is spent on private commissions. His work has been featured in The Christian Science Monitor, House Beautiful, and Vermont Magazine, among other publications. He has lead workshops, served as an artist-in-residence for the Vermont Council on the Arts and given slide-lectures at the annual Furniture Society and SOFA Chicago conferences. He’s taught Italian at Marlboro College, sixth graders at the Marlboro School and written articles for Fine Woodworking and Woodwork Magazine.
Burls, branches, hollow logs, and natural-edged boards... the challenge is to make sense of them within the parameters of functional furniture: material-based design. – David

Michelle has over two decades of experience turning and carving native hardwoods in Southern Vermont, where she lives.
Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S., Australia and Europe. Publications featuring her work include House Beautiful, American Craft, Woodworking, and Fine Woodworking. Her writings have been published in American Craft and Turning Points magazines. She has also lectured and taught at events sponsored by local and national craft organizations.
I respond to the dynamic grain patterns of native hardwood burls. My forms are rendered as vessels. Their function is to project their personalities into the viewer’s space. – Michelle
